Young minds are like sponges. Ready to absorb! While young, our brains are in the ideal zone to learn a second language. Young brains are developing so dramatically in real time.
Learning a second language allows our young NYFACS K-8 public charter school students to be more aware. They’re more aware of cultural differences and therefore better attuned to the wide variety of humans – what sets us apart and what aligns us all. Embedded in our educational approach at NYFACS, our bilingual and biliterate students are both curious and tolerant, and aware of what and how global camaraderie exists; as well as the need for understanding on a human scale.
Biliteracy is a Differentiator
Do you have to be biliterate to understand how humans are the same and different? Of course not. But it truly helps. Bilingualism and biliteracy provide every student with a unique perspective of the many diverse communities that surround us and it prepares our students for broad futures in the complex, nuanced, multicultural communities of the world.
Every NYFACS teacher helps with language development for immersion; we are all hands on deck for every student and their dual language proficiency journey. We accept French language learners and English language learners and with the able and positive help of our spirited teachers, everyone finds their pace. Our teachers ensure every NYFACS student thrives with bilingual language learning, especially if parents don’t speak both languages themselves. This is not an obstacle for us!
Bilinguals Students Have Different Brains
Young minds learn a second language more easily than old(er) brains. So too can this early learning impact the brain’s ability to process complex thoughts, remain focused and at attention for longer stretches of time. Research also exists showing a link to better recovery from stroke and avoidance of dementia for those who are bilingual. Bilingual brains are wired differently.
Our bilingual teachers and administration deeply invest in the life and success of our small, student-centered charter school students. NYFACS recognizes each individual student as the unique person and learner they are.
At NYFACS, we celebrate learning every chance we get — bilingual, biliterate and more!
